How to use a condom properly—avoid breakage or slippage

Condoms that are used consistently and correctly are effective in reducing the risk of unwanted pregnancy and transmitting sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV. Whether the condom is being used for oral, anal, or vaginal sex, there are some key steps to using a condom correctly and avoiding any mishaps, such as breaking or slipping. Remember, mutual consent and foreplay should always precede sexual action. Here we go!

Before you put a condom on:

  • Store condoms in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
  • Check the expiration date on the condom.
  • Does a pillow test — does the air stay in the package?
  • Tear the condom package carefully — without using your teeth — to open.
  • If the condom looks damaged, discolored, or brittle, do not use.
  • Add a drop of lube inside the condom for extra pleasure.
To put a condom on:
  • With one hand, pinch the tip of the condom to leave room for the ejaculate.
  • With the other hand, roll the condom to the base of the penis or object.
  • Continue using this hand to guide any air bubbles out of the condom.
  • Add lube to the outside of the condom to avoid excess friction that may cause breakage.
After the action:

Hold the base of the condom as you pull out to avoid slippage.

Remove the condom and throw away in the trash, not the toilet.

About Condom

What Is It?

Condoms are considered a barrier method of contraception. There are male condoms and female condoms. A male condom is a thin latex (a type of rubber) sheath that is worn on the penis. A female condom is a polyurethane sheath with a flexible ring at either end. One end is closed and is inserted into the vagina, the other end is open and the ring sits outside the opening of the vagina. The male condom is far more widely used and is sometimes called a "rubber" or "prophylactic."

How Does It Work?

The condom works by keeping semen (the fluid that contains sperm) from entering the vagina. The male condom is placed on a guy's penis when it becomes erect. It is unrolled all the way to the base of the penis while holding the tip of the condom to leave some extra rubber. This creates a space for semen after ejaculation and makes it less likely that the condom will break. After the guy ejaculates, he should hold the condom at the base of the penis as he pulls out of the vagina. He must do this while the penis is still erect to prevent the condom from slipping off when he gets soft. If this happens, sperm could enter the vagina.

When properly used, latex and polyurethane condoms are effective against most STDs. Condoms do not protect against infections spread from sores on the skin not covered by a condom (such as the base of the penis or scrotum). For those having sex, condoms must always be used to protect against STDs even when using another method of birth control.

Who Uses It?

Couples who are responsible enough to stop and put a condom on each time before sex and people who want protection against STDs use condoms. Because condoms are the only method of birth control currently available for men, they allow the guy to take responsibility for birth control and STD protection. Condoms are also a good choice for people who do not have a lot of money to spend on birth control.

How Do You Get It?

Condoms are available without a prescription and are sold in drugstores, supermarkets, and even vending machines (in some stores, they're in the "Family Planning" aisle). Condoms come in different sizes, textures, and colors.

How Much Does It Cost?

Condoms are the least expensive and most available method of birth control — other than abstinence, of course. Male condoms cost about BDT 12 Taka to 60 Taka each and are less expensive when they are bought in boxes that contain several condoms.

In addition, many health centers and family planning clinics (such as Planned Parenthood) and some schools distribute them free of charge. Female condoms are a little more expensive and cost condom.

The female condom is inserted into the vagina using the closed-end ring. The other ring creates the open end of the condom. The sheath then lines the walls of the vagina creating a barrier between the sperm and the cervix. The male and female condoms should not be used at the same time because they can get stuck together and cause one or the other to slip during intercourse, making them ineffective. The female condom can be inserted up to 8 hours prior to intercourse. It should be removed immediately after sex.

A used condom should be thrown in the garbage, not down the toilet. Once a condom is used, it cannot be reused. A new condom should be used each time you have sex and it must be used from start to finish every time you have sex to prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Never use oil-based lubricants such as mineral oil, petroleum jelly, or baby oil with condoms because these substances can break down the rubber.

And if a condom ever seems dry, sticky, or stiff when it comes out of the package, or if it is past its expiration date, throw it away and use a new one. It's a good idea to have several condoms on hand in case there is a problem with one. It's best to store unused condoms in a cool, dry place.

How Well Does It Work?

Over the course of 1 year, 15 out of 100 typical couples who rely on male condoms alone to prevent pregnancy will have an accidental pregnancy. The use of the female condom is a little less reliable and 21 out of 100 couples will have an unintended pregnancy.

Of course, these are average figures and the chance of getting pregnant depends on whether you use this method correctly and every time you have sex. In fact studies show that, although it's possible for condoms to break or slip during intercourse, the most common reason that condoms "fail" is that the couple fails to use one at all.

Experts used to think that using spermicide with a condom would decrease the pregnancy rate as well as help fight against STDs. However, more recent information indicates that this is not necessarily true and spermicide does not help make condoms more effective.

In general, how well each type of birth control method works depends on a lot of things. One factor is whether the method chosen is convenient — and whether the person remembers to use it correctly all the time.

Abstinence (not having sex) is the only method that always prevents pregnancy and STDs.

What is HIV - AIDS

What is HIV?

HIV is a virus that affects the natural functioning of the body's immune system. It attacks the 'T-cells' effectively crimpling the body's ability to fight off disease. There have been two major types of HIV identified as of this writing: HIV-1 and HIV-2.

What is AIDS?

AIDS refers to the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, a condition linked to HIV, the Human Immunodeficiency Virus. A person is said to have contracted AIDS when he/she is infected with the HIV virus and his/her doctor determines that he/she has contracted one of several diseases indicating a significant breakdown in the immune system. These diseases include but are not limited to Tuberculosis, involuntary weight loss, Candidiasis, and PCP.

As of the end of 1999, it is estimated that over 34 million people are infected with HIV/AIDS worldwide. (Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS Report June 2000)

What is the difference between HIV and AIDS?

HIV is the infection which can lead to AIDS. People infected with HIV do not necessarily have AIDS, nor will they absolutely develop it. This discrepancy is because of HIV's incubation period, which varies from person to person. The incubation period is from the time of infection with HIV to the onset of AIDS. AIDS occurs because the immune system weakens trying to fight HIV, and other organisms can more freely infect the body with less resistance.

What are the symptoms of HIV/AIDS?

HIV infection may initially cause symptoms similar to mononucleosis such as high fever, night sweats and swollen glands. It should be said however that symptoms vary greatly from person to person. Some individuals infected with HIV may indeed experience no symptoms at all. The only reliable way to determine whether or not you are infected with HIV is to visit a clinic and have the appropriate tests done.

AIDS symptoms are characterized by profound and persistent fatigue; dyspnea (labored breathing); low grade persistent fever; night sweats; unexplained weight loss of more than ten pounds within less than sixty days; dry cough unrelated to smoking or flu; persistent diarrhea and/or bloody stools; ecchymoses, particularly upon limbs; anorexia; opportunistic infections; headaches; a burning sensation upon the posterior tongue and nausea and/or vomiting.

How is HIV contracted?

HIV is a virus which needs to be transferred from one body to another through direct contact, needles or transfusions of blood. The microbe can exist in semen or blood, and potentially saliva as well. The common means of infection are anal or vaginal intercourse, the sharing of needles (such as for drug use), and transmission from mother to fetus. Less common means are oral sex, sharing of sex toys and blood transfusions. Tests for HIV exist, but the virus may not show itself for 20-60 days after infection. Thus it is impossible to ever truly know if a partner is not infected.

How do I protect myself?

Fortunately, it is easy to protect yourself against HIV/AIDS. A person cannot be infected by HIV through the use of a shared toilet seat or towel, nor from shaking hands or hugging an infected person. Unsafe sex is the single largest means of infection, and is the only way contact between people (besides through needles or transfusions) can be considered risky. While this is true, millions of sexually active men and women continue to engage in unsafe sexual practices.

Abstaining from sex altogether is the single best way to protect against HIV/AIDS. For many, celibacy by choice is not an option, and therefore place themselves at some degree of risk. While not 100% effective, a latex condom is the best protection against HIV/AIDS and many other STDs when engaging in vaginal or anal sex. Protection from a latex condom can be enhanced when it is well lubricated, either with pretreated condoms or water-based lubricants. This is particularly important during anal sex in which is more susceptible to the tearing effects of friction. Lessening the friction against the lining of the anus means fewer cuts and lesions for transmission and also protects the integrity of the condom. Protection during oral-vaginal or oral-anal contact is possible through the use of dental dams, which are a latex barrier between the mouth and genitals/anus. Fellatio (oral sex on a man) can be made safer by using an unlubricated or flavored latex condom. The use of the 'pill', spermicides and other birth control methods do not offer protection from HIV infection.

If you are sharing needles, you can protect yourself against HIV/AIDS by cleaning the needles after every use with warm water and bleach. Popular wisdom recommends you flush the bleach-water mixture as far as the plunger will extend 3-4 times, then as many as 5 times with fresh water. However, it is strongly recommended that you do not share needles, as this is a highly infectious means of transmission of HIV.

What is the treatment for HIV/AIDS?

Currently there is no medically recognized cure for HIV/AIDS. The main strategy for treatment has been to attempt to strengthen the immune system so that it may better fight the disease. Please consult your physician about which treatments options would be best for you.

Signs of Pregnancy

Don't you wish it were that simple in real life! Unfortunately, no doctor in the world can tell if you are pregnant by merely checking your pulse. But you might be able to recognize one of these five early signs of pregnancy.

A missed period

This might be one of the first signs of pregnancy you actually notice. If you have regular cycles you may be able to detect that you are pregnant when you miss your period. This is one of the most reliable signs of being pregnant.

Scientific basis:

A period occurs when the body stops producing progesterone (a hormone that plays a special role in the female menstrual cycle and in pregnancy) temporarily. This causes the uterus to shed its lining. When you become pregnant your body starts producing a lot of progesterone to sustain the baby. There is no progesterone withdrawal and no period. Period.

Abdominal bloating and breast tenderness

If your periods are not very regular it might be a little tough to notice a missed period. Abdominal bloating is another sign to look out for. Dr Anjali Rajurkar, an obstetrician from Mumbai, offers this tip, "If you have been trying to get pregnant and your jeans suddenly feel snug check if you are exhibiting other signs of pregnancy". Further, you might notice that your breasts have suddenly turned sore and sensitive.

Scientific basis:

Both abdominal bloating and breast tenderness result from the high levels of hormones your body starts producing when you become pregnant.

Fatigue and sleepiness

You just woke up and had a cup of coffee. But you can't wait to go back to bed again. You feel tired all the time. Well, most pregnant women experience a high degree of fatigue and sleepiness in their first trimester.

Scientific basis:

No one knows for sure why this happens. But experts believe that the high levels of progesterone in your body might be responsible for this feeling of exhaustion.

Nausea and vomiting

Finally! And you thought we would never mention it. For some women nausea is one of the first symptoms of pregnancy. They start feeling unusually queasy and certain odours become very repulsive. Though the nausea and vomiting you experience in the first trimester of pregnancy is called morning sickness, it could occur at any time of the day. It is often triggered by meals. But if you do not have any nausea during the first trimester, do not panic. You might be one of the lucky few who escapes this ordeal entirely.

Scientific basis:

Again, blame it on your hormones. Experts believe that high levels of human chorionic gonadotropin, a hormone vital for the sustenance of pregnancy, causes morning sickness.

Bleeding

Some women experience a small amount of ******l bleeding when they become pregnant. When the fetus implants itself on the wall of the uterus this can happen. The bleeding is extremely light and might last a couple of days. In any case, if you spot ******l bleeding, contact your obstetrician to rule out other causes.

Should you take a test?

The five signs detailed above are physical signs or symptoms. It is important to remember that some women might not experience many of the early symptoms of pregnancy, except for the missed period. A home pregnancy test is one of the easier ways to test if you are pregnant. These kits are available over the counter at most medical stores. The directions are clear and easy to follow. The test takes two minutes and is pretty reliable too. All it requires is a drop of urine. If your test is positive it might be a good idea to repeat the test with your nearest lab and then schedule an appointment with your obstetrician.

If it is negative, remember that the test is not highly sensitive and might become positive only a week after the missed period. So if you have not had a missed period perform the test after you do.

Stay away from some common health problems

Headache:

Water is our most important nutrient. The human body is mostly water roughly 12 gallons. That's approximately 50% to 75% of the body's weight.
